If you’ve seen the series Parks and Recreation (and if you haven’t already, please do yourself a favor and check it out!), then you’re familiar with the concept of Galentine’s Day. For those who don’t know, Galentine’s Day takes place the day before Valentine’s Day, February 13th. The holiday (which at this point should honestly be a national holiday) is a day to eat brunch, spend time with close friends, and celebrate the splendor of platonic relationships.
In the spirit of Galentine’s Day, I decided to put together a playlist of songs about platonic and self-love. Not that I’m trying to spite romantic love; romantic relationships are obviously fulfilling in their own right. But amidst the Valentine’s Day craze, it’s easy to lose sight of other important relationships in our lives whether they’re with our friends, family, or ourselves.
In 2017’s tumultuous political and cultural climate, artists stepped up to deliver anthems of body positivity, self acceptance, and solidarity. The past year gave us empowering bangers like Lizzo’s “Water Me,” while SZA revealed the intricacies of modern love in her breakout album Ctrl, and Kesha delivered a powerful statement on her struggle with sexual assault in Rainbow. As if that wasn’t enough, Dua Lipa graced us with the overnight sensation that we didn’t know we needed until it hit us, “New Rules.”
Of course, I had to include some throwbacks in the mix, because what good would any playlist be without a little Destiny’s Child or Janelle Monáe?
