As another month wraps up, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite new releases. With new albums from Weyes Blood, Control Top, Insignificant Other, and more, April gave us plenty of new tracks to soundtrack the changing of the seasons.
Julia Shapiro, who fronts Seattle-based band Chastity Belt (and plays in a number of other Seattle groups including Childbirth and Who Is She?) is releasing her first solo album this June. Earlier this month, Shapiro released two singles from the upcoming album, including “Natural,” which addresses self-doubt head-on. “How can you love yourself so damn much? / It isn’t natural” Shapiro sings on the song’s chorus.
Lucy Dacus released another song in her holiday-inspired 2019 series. “My Mother and I” arrived just in time for Mother’s Day, and the song explores Dacus’ relationship with her mother, who like Dacus, is a Taurus.
Lizzo just dropped easily one of the year’s most-anticipated albums, Cuz I Love You. The album, which came out on Atlantic, is her first major-label release, and has made the singer/rapper/flautist a household name for her self-love anthems. The album shows off Lizzo’s range, from her crooning on the sultry ballad “Lingerie” to blazing rap verses with Missy Elliott on “Tempo” and Prince-tinged grooves on “Crybaby.”
Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter ALLERGEN released the single “Picket Fence” earlier this month. The song isn’t available on Spotify, but you can listen to it using Bandcamp below:
